UN Deputy Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs Toby Harward stated that the situation in the city of El Geneina, the capital of Western Darfur State, is stable. He pointed out that markets are open, and various trade activities are underway. In his statements today, Harward emphasized the significance of the ongoing UN visit to El Geneina, highlighting its importance for gaining a firsthand understanding of the situation on the ground.
Harward also expressed the urgent need to reestablish operations in West Darfur State, a crucial step that would enable the expansion of humanitarian efforts, ensuring the delivery of aid to those in need.
“We are aware that there is a large number of people in need across various areas of Western Darfur, and achieving security and stability is essential to enable us to deliver the necessary assistance,” he said.
Harward voiced hope that the disputing parties will engage in discussions through the Jeddah platform to reach a ceasefire. “This development would significantly enhance our ability to expand our efforts and deliver humanitarian aid to all communities in Darfur,” he said.
Meanwhile, Acting West Darfur Governor al-Tahir Karshom emphasized that the state has entered a process of gradual recovery following the cessation of hostilities. He added that residents have started returning to their homes in Ardamata and other areas. He also issued an appeal to relief organizations, urging them to provide humanitarian assistance. He highlighted that several organizations had already started operations in the state.
After armed clashes erupted in Ardamata between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces in early November, Karshom worked from the heart of the area to monitor security and stability, deliver essential services, and impose the authority of the state. Meanwhlie, he expressed his firm commitment to ensuring the security of humanitarian convoys traveling to Central and South Darfur.
