Nearly five million people are on the verge of starvation, according to UN reports, as the war passes its first year.<\/span><\/h1>\n

Hunger and starvation have spread across Sudan, according to a Reuters report on Tuesday, which said that the war that broke out in April last year between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) shows no sign of abating.<\/span><\/h1>\n

The outlook is dire, according to interviews with more than 160 civilians caught up in the fighting and more than 60 aid workers and food security experts, as well as a review of food surveys conducted by aid agencies. Reuters reporters spent nearly a week in Omdurman last month, one of three cities that make up the capital Khartoum, interviewing people suffering from severe food shortages.<\/span><\/h1>\n

Annette Hoffman, author of a report on the food emergency in Sudan by the Netherlands-based research organization Klingender, said: “Sudan’s war has created the biggest hunger crisis in the world.” “We are likely to see a famine like we haven’t seen in decades.”<\/span><\/h1>\n

Across Sudan, people are taking increasingly desperate measures to survive. In West Darfur, farmers whose land was looted by the RSF ate the seeds they had bought for planting because they ran out of food. In the Kordofan region, people sold their furniture and clothes to get money to buy food. In Khartoum, residents trapped in their homes are picking, boiling and eating leaves.<\/span><\/h1>\n

Nearly 18 million people in Sudan – more than a third of the country’s population of 49 million – face “high levels of acute food insecurity”, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a globally recognized hunger monitoring tool. The IPC also estimates that among this group, nearly five million people are one step away from famine. The IPC said in March that immediate action was needed “to prevent widespread deaths and the complete collapse of livelihoods and avert a catastrophic hunger crisis in Sudan”. The group added that it was unable to update its December forecast due to data gaps in conflict zones and internet and phone outages in much of Sudan.<\/span><\/h1>\n

Six per cent of the population is expected to face famine. During the dry season between harvests, which starts in May and lasts until September, 40 per cent of people will suffer from starvation.<\/span><\/h1>\n

In some places, people are already dying. M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF) reports that an estimated one child dies on average every two hours in the huge “Zamzam” camp for displaced people in North Darfur – as a result of disease and malnutrition.<\/span><\/h1>\n

Despite the worsening food crisis, the situation in Sudan has received less international scrutiny than other humanitarian emergencies in places like Ukraine and Gaza. Some observers have described the conflict in Sudan as the “forgotten war”.<\/span><\/h1>\n

Some aid officials and food experts have expressed concern about the Hunger Watch Committee’s delay in releasing its latest assessment of the food crisis in Sudan.<\/span><\/h1>\n

While a famine alert does not carry any binding obligations for the UN or governments, it serves to focus the world’s attention on the state of the crisis and mobilize resources for emergency aid. Generally, the decision to declare a famine is made by the government and the UN.<\/span><\/h1>\n

“Deprivation is not limited to the poor. Even before the war, Sudan was facing widespread poverty and increasing hunger. The UN says Sudan is now experiencing the largest displacement crisis, with one in eight internally displaced people worldwide. The fighting has devastated the economy, affecting everyone.)<\/span><\/h1>\n

Nearly half the population is unemployed, according to the International Monetary Fund. The formal banking system has collapsed, leaving people without access to money.
