{"id":24858,"date":"2025-06-20T22:18:42","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T20:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rhinosd.net\/?p=24858"},"modified":"2025-06-20T22:18:42","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T20:18:42","slug":"report-sudanese-army-cracks-down-on-organizations-and-intimidates-volunteers-in-south-kordofan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rhinosd.net\/?p=24858&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"Report: Sudanese army cracks down on organizations and intimidates volunteers in South Kordofan"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Reno: Agencies<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">A report by All Africa on Thursday, June 19, 2025, said that the complex conflict in South Kordofan is severely affecting the humanitarian situation, coinciding with the continued repression of civil society humanitarian groups by the state authorities affiliated with the Port Sudan government.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"> The report noted that this comes after the Humanitarian Commissioner in South Kordofan, Fadlallah Abdel Qader, issued a directive last April to suspend the humanitarian operations of 20 national and international civil society organizations in South Kordofan.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">He explained that among the organizations whose work has been suspended are major international organizations such as World Vision, the Danish Refugee Council, and the Norwegian Refugee Council, as well as local civil society organizations such as the Way-Beer South Kordofan Network and the Street of Accidents Organization in Kadugli.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">According to the report, these suspended organizations were primarily working on emergency aid, peacebuilding, and women&#8217;s rights issues. He said that this move was met with strong condemnation from the emergency rooms in South Kordofan, local networks of volunteers providing humanitarian aid, which were established to support those affected by the war.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The report revealed that local authorities in Kadugli began arresting emergency room volunteers and activists from mid-April to May 2025, and that they arrested six activists on May 12, including a woman who has not yet been fully released, although she has been allowed to return to her home only during nighttime hours.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">According to a 29-year-old former detainee, he was arrested on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the Al-Jalab market in the city of Al-Tartar, in the Al-Tadamun district, by the General Security and Intelligence Service. He was arrested because of his work in emergency rooms in South Kordofan and interrogated on suspicion of espionage.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">According to the report, the detainee was subjected to intimidation and threats of execution, including having guns pointed at his head. He was also beaten on his chest, body, and neck, tortured in a closed, unventilated room, and forced to sit in painful positions for long hours.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">He added that a case under Article 64 of the Penal Code had been brought against him by the authorities, his phones had been confiscated, and he had been imprisoned in a 4 x 3 meter cell with 14 others.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">The report stated that this wave of arrests coincided with the intensification of military campaigns in the region, particularly following visits by leaders of the Al-Baraa Bin Malik Islamic Brigade, which launched local recruitment campaigns.
