{"id":22505,"date":"2025-04-05T21:43:29","date_gmt":"2025-04-05T19:43:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rhinosd.net\/?p=22505"},"modified":"2025-04-05T21:43:29","modified_gmt":"2025-04-05T19:43:29","slug":"un-calls-for-action-to-tackle-explosive-ordnance-crisis-to-protect-civilians-in-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rhinosd.net\/?p=22505&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"UN calls for action to tackle explosive ordnance crisis to protect civilians in Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Nearly two years of intense conflict have left Sudan facing a severe and growing explosive ordnance (EO) crisis, threatening civilians and impeding humanitarian efforts,\u201d the UN said on Thursday.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">As the world marks the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action on 4 April, under the theme \u201cSafe Futures Start Here\u201d, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, called for an urgent scale-up of mine action activities across the country.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u201cThe widespread presence of unexploded ordnance is a silent killer in Sudan\u2019s villages, towns and cities,\u201d Ms. Nkweta-Salami said. \u201cEvery day that passes without action increases the risk to civilian lives.\u201d<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">According to a press release from the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), EO contamination is found in civilian spaces such as homes, backyards, schools, hospitals, and streets. As civilians return to areas such as Khartoum and Wad Madani, explosive hazards pose a major barrier to safe movement, access to essential services, and humanitarian aid delivery.<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">\u201cThe mine action community has been working tirelessly to mitigate these risks, conducting life-saving awareness campaigns and resuming survey and clearance operations in high-risk areas like Omdurman,\u201d UNMAS said. \u201cDespite challenging conditions, these efforts have been critical in safeguarding civilians and aid workers.\u201d<\/span><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Mine action partners are ramping up awareness efforts across media platforms to promote safe behaviour among vulnerable populations.
