Rhino: Agencies – Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency on Thursday quoted Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani as saying that Iran condemns Canada’s designation of the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization, calling it an “unwise, unconventional and politically motivated move”.

“Canada’s move will have no effect on the IRGC’s legitimacy and deterrent power,” Kanani said, adding that Tehran reserves the right to respond to the designation.

Canada on Wednesday designated the IRGC as a terrorist organization, a move that could lead to an investigation against senior former Iranian officials currently living in Canada.

The US took a similar step to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization in 2019. Western countries accuse the IRGC of waging a global campaign of terrorism.

Iran rejects these accusations and says the IRGC is a sovereign organization responsible for protecting the country’s national security.
