legal expert: Enforced disappearances of lawyers and unfair trials in army-controlled areas

Rhino: Agencies – Lawyer and human rights defender, Amir Mohamed Suleiman, said that many organizations’ reports indicated that there are many secret places of detention where thousands of Sudanese are being held, revealing that they include many lawyers, in addition to cases of enforced disappearances.

Amir told Radio Dabanga that some lawyers have been killed in the fighting throughout Sudan, while others have been displaced from their areas to other areas inside Sudan or to neighboring countries.

Others were displaced to some states under the control of the armed forces, where some courts and prosecutions are still operating, he said, adding that some lawyers were subjected to arbitrary accusations of belonging to or collaborating with the RSF, which caused them legal issues before the judicial authorities in Sudan.

He pointed out that in addition to lawyers, many activists, especially those from the resistance or those active in charitable work during the war period, were accused of collaborating with the RSF and trials were held for them in areas of states that are not experiencing war, and he expressed his regret that these trials violated the conditions of fair trial.

He added: ‘One of the conditions for a fair trial is that the judge who applies the law must be impartial, but judges in areas under the control of the armed forces are under very great pressure to convict the people brought before them, especially if they are accused of collaborating with the RSF.
