UN allocates new funding to combat cholera in Sudan

Rhino: Agencies – Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher announced the allocation of $5 million to support efforts to respond to the cholera outbreak in Sudan.

Fletcher noted that the new funding will enable the United Nations to strengthen its vital activities in the areas of health, water, sanitation, and hygiene to limit the spread of the disease.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs explained that the situation requires additional funding, noting that humanitarian partners need $50 million to ensure the continuity of response operations until the end of 2025.

The office warned that the cholera outbreak is exacerbated by ongoing conflict, mass displacement, and the collapse of public health and water systems, noting that more than 33.5 million people, including 5.7 million children under the age of five, are at risk of infection.

The office stressed the urgent need for donors and the international community to double their support to curb the spread of this deadly disease and save lives.
