Everton kick Liverpool out of the Premier League race

Rhino: Agencies – Liverpool moved out of the Premier League title race as they lost the Merseyside derby to Everton 0-2 on Wednesday night.

Jarrad Branthwaite (27) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (58) scored the goals.

Liverpool’s tally stands at 74 points in second place, three points behind leaders Arsenal, and one point ahead of Manchester City, who play Brighton on Thursday and have another postponed game as well.

Everton moved further away from the relegation places, as they raised their tally to 33 points in 16th place.

Liverpool missed an early chance in the fourth minute when Luis Diaz crossed the ball in front of the goal, defender James Tarkowski tried to clear it, but it went wrongly into his own goal, before full-back Mikulenko cleared the ball off the line.

The referee awarded a penalty to Everton after goalkeeper Alisson Becker fouled striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, before it was disallowed for offside in the eighth minute.

Everton opened the scoring in the 27th minute when Godfrey’s shot deflected off the back of a defender and into the path of Bernthwaite, who quickly followed it up, and the ball strangely crossed the line under Alisson’s body.

Everton scored their second goal in the 58th minute, when McNeill delivered a corner towards the far post and Calvert-Lewin rose above everyone to head the ball into the back of the net.

Liverpool made several substitutions in the final ten minutes as the Everton fans in the Goodison Park stands roared their approval.
