WFP renews warning of humanitarian disaster in Sudan

Rhino: Agencies – The World Food Programme (WFP) revealed on Saturday that it is negotiating the delivery of the first two convoys of food aid to Sudan’s Darfur region, after months of being unable to do so, amid warnings of an impending famine threatening the country.

Earlier, a convoy carrying 1,300 tons of supplies was able to reach West and Central Darfur, two areas experiencing emergency levels of hunger, through the “Adré” border crossing with Chad.

The head of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) in Sudan said on Saturday that he was unsure whether he would be able to negotiate the use of the road again.

“I fear that we are witnessing unprecedented levels of hunger and malnutrition sweeping Sudan,” he said. He warned of an impending humanitarian food disaster in Sudan, as a result of the intensified fighting and the inability of organizations to intervene in a number of states.

Since the outbreak of the war between the army and the RSF in April 2023, humanitarian organizations in Sudan have faced difficulties in reaching those in need of aid.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) had previously warned that 4 million Sudanese children under the age of five suffer from malnutrition.
