Toby Harward: Darfur-bound aid stuck in traffic due to aggressive rhetoric

Rhino: Agencies – The United Nations Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Toby Harward, said that relief trucks are stuck on the roads from Port Sudan and the Tine crossing, unable to proceed, due to aggressive rhetoric.

In a press statement, Harward said that through discussions in and around El Fasher over the past few days, all parties have recognized the urgent need to ensure systematic humanitarian access to Darfur areas.

He noted that some trucks have been able to reach IDP camps and sites in North Darfur as a result of these discussions.

“Due to aggressive rhetoric, military activities and administrative obstacles, other trucks are stuck in stations along the roads from Port Sudan and Tine, unable to move forward,” he said.

The UN official called on all parties to work towards creating a safe and unrestricted environment for humanitarian operations wherever needed, regardless of who controls the area.
