IMF expresses concern about the situation in Sudan and describes it as appalling

Rhino: Agencies – International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director Kristalina Georgieva on Thursday expressed concern about the situation in Yemen and Sudan, which she described as appalling.

At a press conference on Thursday, Georgieva praised the “resilience” of the Near and Middle East, for which the IMF will release its updated regional report on Thursday, despite the impact of the war on Gaza and the Yemeni Houthi attacks, which targeted navigation in the Red Sea.

She praised the fiscal situation in most Latin American countries, and reiterated her message about the need to rebuild budget reserves, so that countries have the margins to face what she described as “the next crisis.”

“When there are wars that attract all the attention like in Ukraine or Gaza, they overshadow the suffering and difficulties that appear elsewhere, but rest assured that for the IMF, all our members are entitled to our support and attention, no matter how difficult the circumstances are.

The IMF director said that they have long emphasized the importance of fiscal policy in line with monetary policy, in order to reduce inflation. “We accept the fact that the same approach does not work for everyone, and the speed of fiscal consolidation depends on the specifics of each country.

On Tuesday, the IMF published an update to its annual report on the state of the world economy, predicting growth of 3.2 percent for this year, slightly higher than its previous estimate.
