Rhino: agencies – The Canadian government announced on Friday that it has pledged another $132.2 million in humanitarian funding to help people displaced by the violent conflict in Sudan that has been ongoing since last year. The conflict has killed thousands of civilians, forced millions to flee inside Sudan and to neighboring African countries and created one of the world’s worst hunger crises. The United Nations World Food Program has warned that a third of the country’s population, or 18 million people, face acute famine, and that five million are on the verge of starvation. In an interview with Global News, Canadian International Development Minister Ahmed Hussein described the humanitarian situation in Sudan as “appalling.” The new funding includes $100.7 million in direct humanitarian assistance and $31.5 million for UN projects aimed at addressing sexual and reproductive health rights in Sudan and South Sudan, as well as gender-based violence.
