Rhino: agencies, The European Union announced the adoption of a first set of restrictive measures, to continue using its tools to contribute ending the armed conflict, discouraging the obstruction of humanitarian aid, stopping the culture of impunity, and calling on all countries that supply weapons and funds to the warring parties to immediately stop their support.
One year after the conflict, the European Union called on the parties to the conflict in Sudan – in a statement – for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, as well as the establishment of monitoring mechanisms, to stop the destruction of the Sudanese people and the country. The EU emphasized its continued support for regional and international mediation efforts, noting the importance of coordination and cohesion to bring peace to Sudan.
Sudan is currently facing the worst level of hunger ever recorded, affecting half of its total population, with a real risk of pushing millions into starvation during the upcoming lean season.
The EU reminded the warring parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians, and that blocking access to food, healthcare and relief items is a clear violation of international law and may constitute war crimes.
“Warring parties must honor their mutually agreed commitments in Jeddah to provide immediate, full, safe and unimpeded access for life-saving humanitarian assistance, especially across frontlines and across borders. Deliveries and life-saving operations must be free of bureaucratic and administrative obstacles.)
The EU commended the courage and commitment of local and international humanitarian workers, especially local non-governmental organizations and emergency response rooms.
In its statement, the EU emphasized that it will do its utmost, working with international mechanisms, until all responsible actors are identified and held accountable for the atrocities they have committed and continue to commit.
“The people of Sudan deserve freedom, peace and justice, which is what they have aspired to since the start of their revolution in 2019. The EU reaffirms its unwavering support and solidarity with the Sudanese people in the light of a better future).
