Rhino: Agencies – In a video interview with the Sudanese journalist Tahir Hassan al-Tom, Sanaa Hamad, a leading figure in the dissolved National Congress Party (NCP), reveals that she was tasked by the Islamic Movement with investigating the circumstances surrounding the fall of the deposed Omar al-Bashir regime.
Hamad states that she carried out the investigation in 2019, following the instructions of the late NCP Secretary-General, Zubair Mohamed al-Hassan. She collected testimonies from several Sudanese army leaders, including the then-head of military intelligence, Awad Ibn Auf, and members of the security committee. The testimonies were recorded and signed by the concerned individuals.
The investigation focused on the events leading up to the overthrow of the Bashir regime in April 2019, including the role of the army and the security forces. The findings of the investigation were reportedly handed over to the then-NCP Secretary-General, Zubair Ahmed al-Hassan, in December 2019.
This is the first time that a detailed account of the NCP’s internal investigation into the fall of the Bashir regime has been made public. Hamad’s testimony sheds light on the role of the Islamic Movement in the events of 2019 and raises questions about the fate of the investigation’s findings.
