Doctors Without Borders: We Found Great Cooperation from West Darfur Authorities

Rhino: Mohammed Irfan, the head of the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) mission, told “Rhino” Wednesday that they have found great cooperation from the government authorities in West Darfur.

Irfan confirmed that they will continue to provide medical services at Al-Geneina Hospital, adding: “We are currently studying the expansion of our services to include other departments.”

The government of West Darfur State appealed to MSF to expand its services at Al-Geneina Hospital to include other departments.

This appeal comes after the increase in maternal and newborn mortality rates.

Tajani Al-Tahir Kershoum, the acting Wali of West Darfur, said during his meeting with the MSF delegation:

Health facilities have been severely affected by the war, leading to a bitter humanitarian reality.

The organization has made great medical efforts at Al-Geneina Hospital and contributed to saving the situation.

The organization supervises the children’s department and provides electricity and medicines.

All citizens of the neighboring localities, states, and Chad depend on Al-Geneina Hospital for treatment.

The hospital suffers from a severe shortage of staff and a scarcity of medical equipment.

Kershoum appealed to MSF to expand its services to include the accident and emergency department.

Kershoum strongly rejected the decisions of the federal government to stop humanitarian aid and prevent it from reaching the citizens of West Darfur.

Kershoum stated: “The center did not send any medicine for a whole year, and these are unjust decisions that will worsen the humanitarian situation.”

Dr. Abdul Salam Mustafa Saleh, the Director General of the Ministry of Health, praised MSF for its efforts in the health sector.

Saleh stressed that health work is an integrated system and that any gap in one department affects other departments.

Dr. Qamar Al-Anbiya Mohamed Al-Hassan, the Director of Therapeutic Medicine, said:

Al-Geneina Hospital suffers from a severe shortage of medical supplies and health workers.

The lack of healthcare has led to the death of a large number of mothers and newborns.

Many doctors and health workers have migrated to neighboring countries and other states due to the war.

The Swiss organization Doctors Without Borders supervises the children’s and nutrition department.

The organization also works in the laboratory and blood bank.

The organization provides some financial assistance to the medical staff in the children’s department.
