Alexei Navalny Funeral: Russian Opposition Leader Laid to Rest in Moscow Amid Large Crowds

Rhino: ِagencies – Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was buried in a Moscow cemetery on Friday amid a large crowd of mourners, two weeks after his death in a prison in the Arctic.

A short candlelight funeral service was held at a nearby church before Navalny was buried to the soundtrack of the movie “Terminator 2,” which his spokeswoman said was the 47-year-old’s favorite film.

The coffin was open in accordance with Russian Orthodox tradition, but was closed after the religious service, with Navalny’s parents seen embracing.

At the cemetery, Navalny’s coffin was lowered into the grave to the sound of the “Terminator 2” theme music.

Western leaders condemned Navalny’s death, with his supporters accusing President Vladimir Putin of murder and trying to prevent a dignified public burial.

The Kremlin, which has denied involvement and dismissed the accusations as “hysteria,” warned against “unauthorized” protests around the funeral.

Some mourners chanted “We will not forget you” and “Forgive us” as the coffin arrived for burial, and thousands then filed past the grave to pay their last respects.

Nearby, a few hundred people could be heard chanting anti-war slogans.

Earlier this week, Navalny’s widow, Yulia Navalnaya, said she feared the funeral could be disrupted by arrests.

The OVD-Info rights group said that about 400 mourners had been detained at memorials to Navalny since his death, and there were fears of more arrests at the funeral.

A heavy police presence was seen at the funeral.

Navalny, the most prominent opponent of President Vladimir Putin, died in prison in the Arctic at the age of 50 after suffering an unknown illness. His supporters accused Putin of killing him, while the Kremlin denied any involvement in his death.
