UN: Gaza suffers from unprecedented levels of hunger and food insecurity

Rhino – Agencies: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) revealed on Monday that residents of the Gaza Strip are suffering from “unprecedented” levels of “conditions of famine” as the war between Israel and Hamas continues.

In a statement by the Deputy Director General at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Beth Bechdol said: “There are unprecedented levels of acute food insecurity, hunger and conditions that mimic famine in Gaza”.

“We see an increasing number of people approaching to conditions famine of famine”, she said.

She added by referring that: “All people living in Gaza (2.2 million) are classified among the three worst levels of hunger, from Level 3 which is considered an emergency, to Level 5 which is considered a disaster”, and she noted, where the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) divides hunger levels from one to five.

“At this point, about 25% of this 2.2 million people may be in the fifth category”, she said.

She also explained that before the war, Gaza had a self-sufficient fruit and vegetable production sector full of greenhouses, and they also had a strong livestock sector.

“We realized through an assessment of the damage that most of these livestock as well as the infrastructure needed for this agricultural production were destroyed”, she continued.

Some 550,000 people face catastrophic levels of food insecurity, while the crisis affects all residents of the sector, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said.

The war in the Gaza Strip entered its 129th day, on the occasion of heavy shelling and clashes in the densely populated southern city of Rafah and displaced people, amid international and international and international warnings and fears of a humanitarian disaster.
