The Sudan Founding Coalition (Tasis) is monitoring recent developments regarding the use by the army of the terrorist Islamic Movement of internationally banned chemical weapons across wide areas during the ongoing war in Sudan, as well as the accompanying international actions that underscore the gravity of these violations. The use of these weapons against civilians in Khartoum, Al-Jazirah, Kordofan, and Darfur is an indisputable fact, constituting a grave crime and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
The confirmed use of these weapons must result in holding the military authority of the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood group fully legally accountable, and necessitates the adoption of the measures stipulated within the framework of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), including the suspension of certain rights and privileges of the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist group’s authority within the organization, and the expulsion of its representatives due to its breach of its obligations under the Convention and the proven use of internationally prohibited chemical agents.
The Sudan Founding Coalition also calls for urgent international action to address the remaining stockpiles of chemical weapons intended for use in the coming period by the Islamic Movement’s army—primarily chlorine gas—and to work to prevent their renewed use in conflict zones and ensure their safe disposal in accordance with international standards.
The Coalition calls on the UN Security Council to adopt an urgent resolution to establish an independent international fact-finding and investigative mission to probe the use of chemical weapons in Sudan, to hold those responsible for these crimes accountable, and to oversee the destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles used in the war, thereby ensuring the protection of civilians and preventing the recurrence of such violations.
