New Ukrainian army chief sets his next target

Rhino: In his first public statement since taking command of the Ukrainian military, Colonel General Oleksandr Sirsky set his next goal.

The new commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces said on Friday that the armed forces need to adapt and invent new methods of fighting for victory.

There’s no new in the fighting fronts in Ukraine for months, due to Russia’s tight fortifications.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday the appointment of Colonel Sersky as the new commander-in-chief of the armed forces to replace General Valery Zalogny. It is the biggest change for senior leaders since the Russian military operation and comes at a challenging time.

“Continuous change and improvement of the means and methods of warfare is the only way to succeed,” Sirsky said in a statement in Telegram, referring to drones and cyberwarfare as examples of new technology that would help Ukraine achieve victory.

The change of commanders comes in a difficult period for Ukraine, which has failed to retake large areas since late 2022, and is now facing a possible interruption in military aid from the United States, which is its biggest backer.

Russian forces are currently launching an attack on the Ukrainian front-line in the city of Avdiivka, in an escalation of efforts for months to control it.

Sersky, who was commander of the ground forces, successfully commanded the defense operations of the Ukrainian capital at the start of the Russian operation and the blitzkrieg-offensive in the Northeast, both were two of the biggest successes in the first year of the war.

Sirsky has been critical of some Ukrainian soldiers during Ukraine’s defense of the eastern Bakhmut city, where thousands of both sides were killed before Kiev’s troops withdrew in May 2023.

Bakhmut did not have major military significance, but was considered a symbol of steadfastness in Ukraine.
