Hemeti warns of impending famine in Sudan

Khartoum-Rhino: The leader of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, on Thursday warned from the impending famine in Sudan, because of what he called the “deliberate measures” imposed by the “Port Sudan Group” in hindering the passage of humanitarian aid, where more than (70%) of it is detained in the port of Port Sudan, waiting for clearance procedures and transit to the areas of Khartoum, Al-Jazeera, Darfur and Kordofan.

In a tweet on his account in (X) platform on Thursday, Dagalo said that the current war in Sudan has been ignited by the remnants of the defunct regime and their elements in the Sudanese Armed Forces, it has produced many disasters, foremost of which is the humanitarian disaster, which has worsened with the continuation of the war for ten months, and has now reached the beginning of famine in some areas in the country.

The Commander of the Rapid Support Forces made an urgent appeal to the regional and international community to confront what he called the current “humanitarian disaster”, through the fulfillment of all international partners of their obligations under international humanitarian law, and the implementation of urgent humanitarian interventions to save the lives of those affected in the most affected areas, by urgently increasing humanitarian assistance to all areas of Sudan to face the current disaster, and transporting it by land and air, “especially to the remote areas of Darfur and Kordofan, which suffer from the deliberate isolation from the Port Sudan Group.”

Hemeti stressed the need to reach an agreement as soon as possible to start a program similar to the (Lifeline) program, which was implemented under an agreement signed in 1989 between UNICEF – a representative of the United Nations – and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, and the Government of Sudan in the era of the Third Democracy. He added: “Because the current leadership of the armed forces may reject this step because it does not care about the suffering of the Sudanese, we declare our readiness to enter into a bilateral agreement, and cooperate with the competent international organizations and agencies, to implement it to save civilians in the areas we control”.

He concluded his speech by saying: “Humanitarian partners and the international community must exert as much pressure as possible on the Port Sudan Group to fulfill its obligations under international humanitarian law, the Jeddah Declaration for the Protection of Civilians, signed on May 11, 2023, and the paper of commitments signed on November 4 of the same year, by providing all necessary facilities, removing bureaucratic obstacles, and ensuring humanitarian access to those affected”.
