US Ambassador to Sudan John Godfrey to step down from his position

Rhino: Many sources revealed about the decision of US ambassador to Sudan, John Godfrey, to step down from his position in the coming weeks, according to different diplomatic sources, coinciding with the appointment of a special US presidential envoy to Sudan.

At the same context there is no enough information why Godfrey, who has been in his office since August 2022 decided to step down, but his relationship with some representatives in Congress has been fairly tense, especially among Republicans, about how Biden’s administration dealt the evacuation of U.S. citizens after the violence erupted on 15th of April in Khartoum.

He is the first confirmed U.S. ambassador to Sudan after more than a quarter of a century, he has been managing U.S. interests in Sudan from Addis Ababa since the outbreak of the Sudan war in April last year, which led to close US embassy and evacuation of foreign diplomats.

Currently he still has efforts for peace in Sudan from the Addis Ababa where he runs the interests of US from, with help of U.S. officials who have decades of experience in Africa, Molly Phee, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, and Mike Hammer, U.S. special envoy for the Horn of Africa.
