UNICEF: Drones Kill and Injure More than 400 Children in 9 Months

Rhino: Follow-up – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned of a rising death toll from drone attacks in Sudan, reporting that more than 400 children were killed or injured between January and September 2026.

The organization noted that the attacks were not limited to targeting civilians but also caused damage to homes, schools, health facilities, water networks, and markets.

UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa, Itliva Kadeli, said in a statement that a drone attack targeting a market in Nyala on October 26 killed at least five children, aged 7 to 14, and injured two others.

It added that drone strikes killed at least 80 people, including women and children, at a market in the Abyei region on October 19.

UNICEF called for an end to the killing and wounding of children, stressing that going to markets or schools and accessing health care should not become a life-threatening ordeal.
