Death Toll from Army Massacre of Civilians in Nyala Rises to 188 Dead and 356 Wounded

Rhino: Follow-up – The Ministry of Health of the Transitional Government of Peace announced that the death toll from the attack on the Tengong Market in the capital city of Nyala has risen to 188 dead and 356 wounded, according to the latest reports from health institutions and medical teams working in the field.

This tragic rise in the number of casualties comes as medical and emergency personnel continue their efforts to treat the large number of injured and provide urgent medical care to the wounded—including those with serious and critical injuries—amid exceptional pressures facing health facilities due to the scale of the injuries and growing medical needs, according to a statement issued today by the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry confirmed that the figures announced reflect the toll recorded as of the time of this update and that it will continue to monitor developments in the health and humanitarian situation, in coordination with health institutions and medical teams, noting that the casualty figures may change based on subsequent field reports.

The Ministry of Health reiterated its condemnation of the targeting of civilians, civilian facilities, and markets, and emphasized that protecting the civilian population and ensuring that the injured have unimpeded access to health services are fundamental obligations under international humanitarian law.

The statement called on international and humanitarian organizations to take urgent action to support health institutions in the city of Nyala and to provide the medicines, surgical supplies, blood bags, and medical supplies necessary to save the lives of the injured. It emphasized the need to hold those responsible for any violations accountable and to ensure that perpetrators do not escape accountability.
