Threatens to Rebel: Army Finance Minister Refuses to Resign After Currency Collapse

The Port Sudan government is witnessing a dangerous escalation after Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim refused to resign from his post and threatened to rebel against the state if his ministerial portfolio were to be tampered with or if any minister from the armed movements were removed, according to informed sources. This comes amid a fierce media campaign launched by remnants of the former regime against the government of Kamel Idris, blaming it for the worsening economic collapse.

According to the sources, Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan dispatched Prime Minister Kamel Idris and a number of mediators to request Jibril Ibrahim’s resignation, in an attempt to contain the mounting anger over the deteriorating economic conditions. However, Jibril categorically rejected the request and threatened escalation and rebellion if the Ministry of Finance were taken away from him or if any minister affiliated with the armed movements were targeted.

This development comes amid escalating disputes within the Port Sudan camp, following previous threats by the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement, Minni Arko Minnawi, to launch an armed rebellion should Burhan proceed to arm any new militias—a sign that the conflict among the ruling coalition’s factions is widening.

In the same vein, media campaigns linked to the Islamic Movement continue to target ministers from the armed movements, amid accusations that they are exploiting the economic crisis to incite public opposition against the government of Kamal Idris, at a time when living conditions are deteriorating and the Sudanese currency is rapidly collapsing.

The Port Sudan government faces mounting pressure both domestically and internationally, as the war continues, international sanctions remain in place, and economic conditions deteriorate—all while disputes among the ruling factions escalate and mutual threats of rebellion intensify.
