Rhino: Follow-up – In its plenary session today, Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the formulation of a unified and joint European strategy to counter the Muslim Brotherhood’s networks and the infiltration of political Islamist movements into European institutions and societies. The adoption followed a draft resolution submitted by the European People’s Party (EPP) group—the largest political bloc in Parliament—which received broad support from right-wing and conservative parties, following a heated vote that revealed a striking divide among political factions across the Old Continent.
A total of 381 members voted in favor of the resolution, while 167 members—primarily from the Greens, the Radical Left, and the Socialists and Democrats—voted against it; 15 members abstained.
The new resolution sets out a package of non-binding strategic measures, but they constitute a powerful tool for exerting political pressure on the European Commission and member states. The resolution calls on the Commission to closely monitor all funding channels for religious and civil society organizations in Europe and to immediately cut off any public funding to entities proven to be linked to the agendas of political Islam. It also urges EU capitals to conduct a thorough review of the possibility of formally designating individuals and organizations affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood network as terrorist entities on approved European lists.
In the context of fortifying institutions, the Parliament called for the development of a unified preventive security and political approach to protect civil society structures and democratic institutions from attempts at ideological infiltration, explicitly demanding that specific youth organizations be excluded from transparency registries and that cooperation with them be prohibited, foremost among them the Forum of European Muslim Youth and Student Organizations.
