Crowds rally in Nyala in support of the Peace Government

NYALA, 1 October 2026 — Thousands gathered in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur, in support of the Peace Government affiliated with the Sudan Founding Alliance, known as Tasis, affirming that legitimacy comes from the people. Demonstrators called for Sudanese army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, all army commanders, and the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood organization standing behind the army to be held accountable for their involvement in the use of chemical weapons during the war in Sudan.

Images from the demonstration showed crowds carrying Sudanese and Tasis flags, alongside banners supporting the government and slogans calling for an end to attacks on civilians and an international investigation into the use of prohibited weapons.
Speeches and chants focused heavily on the chemical weapons issue, with participants urging the international community and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to investigate the allegations, identify those responsible and ensure accountability.

The protests come amid growing international scrutiny over the use of chemical weapons in Sudan. The United States has formally determined that Sudan’s government used chemical weapons in violation of international law, a finding that resulted in US sanctions.
Pressure on the army leadership intensified further after investigations published in September by The Washington Post revealed documents, video footage and internal communications pointing to the development and stockpiling of chlorine-based munitions within the military establishment. Sudanese authorities rejected the findings.

Nyala demonstration also carried a clear political message in support of the Peace Government institutions established by the Tasis alliance. Participants raised slogans calling for peace, equality and the building of a new state, while supporters of the government presented the turnout as evidence of public backing for its political project in areas under its control.
