Fact-Finding Mission Receives Information on Sudanese Army’s Production of Chemical Weapons Using Chlorine Gas

Rhino: Agencies – The Sudanese army faces new accusations of using chemical weapons after a UN fact-finding mission confirmed that it had received information regarding activities linked to the use of chlorine gas in the production of chemical weapons.

The Sudan Times quoted the head of the UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan, Mohamed Shand Osman, as saying that the mission had reviewed the same information revealed by recent investigations by The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Othman emphasized that the mission has not yet determined the veracity of these allegations, explaining that his team is working to verify the facts and determine whether chemical weapons were actually manufactured or used.

He added that if these allegations are substantiated, they will become the subject of an investigation by the mission, given that the use of chemical weapons may constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law.

These allegations add a new case to the list of violations the UN mission has been investigating since the outbreak of the war in Sudan, while establishing the facts and determining responsibility remain contingent on the results of the investigation.
