Civil Authority: 10 to 20 People Dying Daily in Jebel Marra and Tawila Due to Famine

Jebel Marra: Rhino – The Civil Authority in areas controlled by the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA), led by Abdul Wahid Mohamed Ahmed al-Nour, has warned that the regions of Jebel Marra, Tawila, and Ain Sero are on the verge of a famine disaster, with 10 to 20 deaths recorded daily inside camps for internally displaced persons.

The head of the region’s civil authority, Majib Abdulrahman, added in a statement that more than 10 million civilians and displaced persons are living under extremely harsh living and health conditions, amid rising rates of malnutrition and mortality among children, women, and the elderly due to acute shortages of food and medical care.

He attributed the causes of the crisis to the obstruction of relief convoys and the use of food as a weapon against civilians, as well as the failure of the agricultural season, a shortage of medicines, the spread of epidemics, contaminated drinking water, and the absence of field hospitals.

He called on the United Nations and the Security Council to issue an urgent resolution to deliver food and medical aid immediately without administrative or political obstacles, to open and secure humanitarian corridors, to protect civilians, and to hold both parties to the conflict accountable under international humanitarian law.

He emphasized that leaving millions of displaced people to face death by starvation is “a stain on the conscience of humanity,” calling on the international community to take immediate action before it is too late.
