rhino: Agencies – England’s interim head coach Lee Carsley says the celebrations have stopped as we look to close the book on the win over Greece.
Carsley is looking to secure promotion to the UEFA Nations League’s top tier by beating Ireland on Sunday. The game will be the team’s 17th and final of the year, which saw them reach their second final in their last three tournaments and the third in the men’s team’s history.
The defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final marked the end of former coach Gareth Southgate’s career with the team, and his successor Thomas Tuchel will take over after promotion to the first level of the UEFA Nations League.
Carsley’s side bounced back from a 1-2 home loss to Greece last month to win 3-0 in Athens on Thursday, a win that means England need to beat Ireland in the final game to secure top spot in the group and promotion.
Carsley commented: “I think we’ve shown in the past that we have a lot of players with a lot of potential. “We’ve played with that balance, and we’ve got a lot of stars with potential but they’re also out of form sometimes, which has to be kept in mind.”
Carsley continued: “But I think there was a great performance in the game, a great effort from the team and hopefully we can see that again at Wembley.”
