Teacher’s Committee Rejects Deductions by the General Union, Calling It an Illegal Entity

Rhino: Follow-up – The Sudanese Teachers’ Committee announced its categorical rejection of the contents of the letter issued by the Audit Bureau of Al-Jazirah State on July 28, 2026, which directs the commencement of a 3,000-pound deduction from teachers’ salaries, effective with the August 2026 paycheck, in favor of the so-called General Union of Education Workers.

The committee called on teachers to resist the decision through all legal and union means and to refuse to allow their salaries to be diverted to fund bodies they did not elect—bodies that have not defended their rights or stood with them in the face of low wages, delayed salaries, arbitrary dismissals, or the violations to which teachers have been subjected, according to a statement issued today.

The statement read: “This letter reveals the continuation of the old approach that has long characterized the clinically dead unions of the National Congress Party—bodies that have lost any real legitimacy among workers but are still summoned whenever the authorities wish to push through policies that undermine their rights and impose new burdens on them against their will”.

The statement added: “This deduction constitutes a clear violation of the principle of freedom of association guaranteed by International Labor Organization Convention No. 87, which Sudan has ratified, and which is based on the freedom to form trade unions and to join or not join them without coercion; and it is not permissible to impose union membership or deduct dues from any worker without their free and explicit consent).

He continued: (The so-called General Union of Education Workers has never been known for standing up for teachers, but it becomes active when it comes to pay cuts, while it remains silent in the face of just demands and shirks its duties; indeed, it colludes through its silence with the policies that have impoverished workers and squandered their rights. Therefore, its role is now limited to providing a mere facade to push through the authorities’ decisions at the expense of the true stakeholders. The imposition of forced deductions from teachers’ salaries can only be described as legalized plunder of workers’ funds and an abuse of state authority to divert their money to entities that lack legitimacy and representation).

The committee called on male and female teachers to stand united in rejecting this practice, to demand an end to any deductions made without the employee’s consent, and to uphold their full right to freedom of association and to choose their representatives of their own free will, free from guardianship and coercion.
