ICRC Organizes a Workshop on International Humanitarian Law in Nyala

Rhino: Follow-up – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Sudan organized a workshop on human rights principles and international humanitarian law for the Rapid Support Forces in the city of Nyala, South Darfur State. The Committee’s official spokesperson, Farid al-Humaid, told “Radio Dabanga” that the International Committee is working to promote understanding of and respect for international humanitarian law among all parties involved in hostilities.

He explained that this includes organizing workshops and other activities to disseminate the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law, which governs the conduct of hostilities and protects civilians, persons who have ceased to participate in hostilities, and civilian objects.

The ICRC confirmed that it is conducting bilateral and confidential dialogue with parties involved in armed conflicts to address humanitarian concerns and promote respect for international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians, as well as persons who have ceased to take part in hostilities, and civilian objects, as well as facilitating humanitarian access and helping to ensure that aid reaches those who need it most.

Al-Humaid said that Lorenzo Caravi had arrived in Sudan to assume his duties as the new head of the mission in Sudan, noting that during his first visit to Khartoum, Caravi witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of the conflict. He added that Caravi observed that the needs are immense throughout Sudan—from Khartoum to Darfur, Kordofan, and other conflict-affected areas—and continued, “We will continue to work side by side with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society to promote respect for international humanitarian law and provide life-saving assistance.”
