Red Cross: More Than 9,000 People Reported Missing in Sudan Over 3 Years

Rhino: Agencies – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced that it has recorded more than 9,000 cases of missing persons in Sudan during three years of conflict.

Farid Al-Hamid, spokesperson for the ICRC mission in Sudan, said these figures reflect a facet of human suffering that does not always appear in broader statistics.

He added that more than 33 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, while more than 11 million have been displaced from their homes as Sudan enters its fourth year of war.

He noted that nearly 80% of health facilities in the hardest-hit areas have ceased operations, and that farmers have lost their harvests and livelihoods due to the inability to access their land.

The committee affirmed that it would continue to engage with the parties to the conflict under the Geneva Conventions to remind them of their obligations toward civilians, in addition to supporting health facilities and water networks to provide urgent assistance.
