By Consensus: Human Rights Council Adopts Resolution on El Obeid

Rhino: Agencies – On Monday, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution on the situation in the Sudanese city of El Obeid by consensus, without a vote.

The resolution calls for a cessation of hostilities, the strengthening of protection for civilians, the guarantee of unimpeded access to humanitarian aid, and the condemnation of all forms of external interference that fuel the conflict.

Although the Port Sudan authorities objected to the continuation of the mandate of the United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan, the Human Rights Council upheld the mission’s mandate and tasked it with conducting an urgent investigation into the situation in and around El Obeid, with the findings to be presented to the Council during its next session in September, while reaffirming its rejection of all forms of external interference that contribute to fueling the conflict.
