UN: Uganda Hosts More Than 2 Million Refugees and Asylum Seekers on Its Territory

Rhino: Follow-up – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) renewed its commitment to protecting refugees and promoting their rights, coinciding with World Refugee Day, under the slogan “Until everyone is safe, the work is not done” In a message, UNHCR emphasized that the responsibility to protect those fleeing conflict, violence, and persecution remains a global humanitarian priority.

In a statement, UNHCR noted that the world is marking this occasion this year amid growing humanitarian and health challenges, pointing out that Uganda hosts more than two million refugees and asylum seekers, making it one of the world’s largest host countries for refugees.

The statement explained that this year’s theme carries a powerful message affirming that the right to seek safety and protection remains a fundamental and legitimate right, just as stipulated in the 1951 Refugee Convention, which established the international legal framework for protecting people forced by wars and conflicts to leave their homelands.

UNHCR emphasized that the support of host communities, humanitarian partners, and donors remains a crucial factor in protecting refugees and strengthening their ability to become self-reliant and resilient in the face of challenges, reaffirming the central message of World Refugee Day: (Until everyone is safe, the work is not done).
