Rhino: Agencies – Health authorities in Darfur have detected new confirmed cases of monkeypox in the Soni area, one of the regions of Jebel Marra in the state, in a development that signals a widespread health threat.
The outbreak comes at a disastrous time, amid a total collapse of the health sector and medical services in the rugged mountainous region. This reality raises the risk level to unprecedented heights and threatens a large-scale health and humanitarian disaster.
Observers have warned that the rugged terrain and the absence of functioning treatment centers and hospitals could turn the outbreak into an uncontrollable disaster, given the current health system’s inability to respond quickly or contain cases.
They called for urgent intervention by health authorities and humanitarian organizations to provide vaccines, testing teams, and isolation centers before the situation spirals out of control.
