The International Organization for Migration announced that nearly one-third of Sudan’s population has been displaced within the country and abroad, in one of the world’s largest displacement crises since the war broke out in April 2023.

In an update released Sunday, the organization said that the number of Sudanese forced to flee within the country or seek refuge abroad has reached about 15 million, as the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate.

The organization noted that the number of internally displaced persons has more than tripled during the conflict, recording an increase of over 200 percent, after jumping from 3.8 million displaced persons in 2023 to approximately 11.58 million by 2025.

It added that Sudan has witnessed 805 waves of displacement since the start of the war, at a rate of one new wave every 33 hours, with some months recording as many as 88 waves of displacement.

According to the organization, the waves of displacement have spread across all of Sudan, with those fleeing the conflict seeking refuge in approximately 13,000 shelters and camps across the country’s 18 states.

The International Organization for Migration confirmed that approximately 8.9 million people remain internally displaced within Sudan; although this number has decreased by 23 percent compared to the peak of the crisis, it is still more than double pre-war levels.

Conversely, the data revealed that nearly 4 million people have returned to their areas, including 83 percent who returned from internal displacement and 17 percent who returned from countries of asylum.

The organization noted that the displacement crisis is no longer linked solely to the war, as natural disasters—particularly floods and fires—have forced more than a quarter of a million people to flee their homes.

Since April 15, 2023, Sudan has been embroiled in a war between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces, which has killed tens of thousands and caused a humanitarian disaster described by the United Nations as the worst in the world.
