200 Cases of Monkeypox Reported in Jebel Marra; Calls for Urgent International Intervention

Rhino: Agencies – The civilian authority affiliated with the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA), led by Abdul Wahid Mohamed Nur, announced that 200 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been recorded in several areas of the region, amid growing fears that the outbreak could turn into a widespread health and humanitarian crisis in areas under its control.

A statement issued by the Civil Authority stated that these cases pose a serious threat to the safety of the civilian population in the region, estimated at more than 10 million people. The statement explained that the “Dera District” recorded the highest infection rates according to reports from the Spanish branch of “Doctors Without Borders,” with cases concentrated in the areas of Suni, Jawa, and Dera.

The Civil Authority expressed grave concern that the epidemic could spiral out of control if the outbreak continues, warning of potentially catastrophic consequences for the region given the deterioration of medical services, the acute shortage of healthcare, and the difficulty in accessing treatment.

The statement appealed to the international community, UN agencies, and health and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently and reach the affected areas to provide the necessary medical support and contain the epidemic before the humanitarian crisis worsens.
