Al-Taishi Issues Decree Establishing the Transitional Monetary Council to Promote Monetary Stability

Nyala: Rhino – Mohammed Hassan Al-Taishi, Prime Minister of Sudan’s Transitional Government of Peace, issued a decree on Monday, May 11, 2026, establishing the “Transitional Monetary Council.” The decree aims to promote monetary stability and regulate banking affairs in areas under the control of the “Transitional Government.” The Council enjoys legal personality and administrative and financial independence, and is responsible for managing domestic monetary policy.

The Council is responsible for regulating currency circulation, overseeing currency exchange programs, and monitoring the money supply through a specialized technical office. It also grants licenses to conduct banking operations in coordination with the Governor of the Central Bank of Sudan.

This move follows a series of economic decisions recently taken by the Coexistence Government, most notably Decision No. (5) of 2026 issued in early May, which banned the circulation of Sudanese banknotes issued after June 2024 and deemed them invalid.

The Council is a temporary body whose mandate will end by a decision of the Council of Ministers once monetary conditions stabilize.
