Port Sudan and Ethiopia Exchange Accusations of Military Attacks

Rhino: Agencies – A report by “The Reporter Ethiopia” stated that relations between the governments of Port Sudan and Ethiopia are witnessing a dangerous escalation, amid mutual accusations regarding support for armed groups and involvement in cross-border military operations, which portends a worsening of tensions in the Horn of Africa.

According to the report, the Ethiopian government, through official spokespeople, accused the Sudanese army of providing military and logistical support to elements linked to the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, the group that has waged a bloody conflict with the federal government in Addis Ababa over the past few years.

According to Ethiopian statements, this support includes supplying those elements with weapons and funding, as well as facilitating their movements across the shared border between the two countries.

Addis Ababa considers these actions a direct violation of its sovereignty and a threat to its national security, particularly given the ongoing internal tensions related to the Tigray region, despite previous agreements aimed at ending the conflict.

In a move reflecting the intensity of the tension, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Port Sudan announced the recall of its ambassador from the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, in a diplomatic move that reflects the deterioration of relations between the two countries.

Port Sudan officials also indicated that their government is prepared to deal with any threats and did not rule out the option of open confrontation should what they described as “aggressions” continue.

This escalation comes amid a complex regional context, where internal conflicts in Sudan intersect with geopolitical balances in the Horn of Africa, alongside the active roles of regional powers.

Observers believe that the mutual accusations between Port Sudan and Addis Ababa reflect a shift in the conflict from traditional border disputes to a multidimensional conflict involving regional security and political and military alliances.

Analysts warn that continued escalation could push the region toward further instability, particularly given the fragile domestic situations in both countries, meaning that any direct or indirect confrontation would have far-reaching repercussions for the entire Horn of Africa.
