Facing charges punishable by death: Port Sudan authorities pursue journalist Abdel Moneim Suleiman

Khartoum: Rhino – The Prosecution for Crimes Against the State in Port Sudan issued an arrest warrant today for journalist, writer, and human rights defender Abdul Moneim Suleiman (Moneim Suleiman), based on reports submitted by the Port Sudan Authority’s intelligence agency, under Articles 51 and 66 of the 1991 Penal Code, which pertain to inciting war against the state and harming the country’s interests—charges carrying a potential death penalty. He was summoned to turn himself in and appear before the prosecution within 72 hours.

In response to the charges brought against him by the Port Sudan authorities, Abdul Moneim Suleiman told (Rhino) that this is clear evidence that the Islamic terrorist movement is the one running the government in Port Sudan.

He added: “The charges are the same ones brought against me before the revolution; the articles are the same; the prosecution is the same; and the complainant is the same old one—namely, the brotherhood intelligence apparatus. So what has changed? And what happened before? They fell yesterday, and they will fall today, and all their crimes and lies will fall with them.”

Journalist Abdel Moneim Suleiman is one of the most prominent journalistic voices opposing the military rule and the Islamists supporting it, since their coup against the civilian government in October 2021. He writes articles and reports for a number of Sudanese, Arab, and foreign websites and newspapers, and hosts the widely followed and popular podcast “Sudan 360.
