Iran hints at increasing the range of its ballistic missiles and reviewing its nuclear doctrine

Rhino: Agencies – Kamal Kharrazi, an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, said on Friday that Tehran is likely to increase the range of its ballistic missiles. He added that a review of Iran’s nuclear doctrine was also possible amid growing tension with arch-enemy Israel and an exchange of air strikes with it.

When asked by the Lebanon-based pro-Islamic Republic channel Al-Mayadeen whether Iran was prepared for the possibility of a wider conflict after the latest strikes, Kharrazi said Tehran was likely to increase the range of its ballistic missiles beyond its self-imposed limit of 2,000 kilometers.

He said that although Iran technically has the capability to produce nuclear weapons, it is currently constrained by a fatwa issued by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the early 2000s.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say over Tehran’s nuclear program, prohibited the development of nuclear weapons in that fatwa. The Islamic Republic has always denied trying to build nuclear weapons and insists that its nuclear work is for peaceful purposes only.

Iranian officials say Tehran does not need to increase the range of its ballistic missiles beyond 2,000 kilometers because they can already reach U.S. forces stationed in the region.
