Khartoum: Rhino – Khalid Omer Yousif, a leader of the Sumood Alliance and deputy head of the Sudanese Congress Party, said on Friday that army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan claims to belong to the December revolution out of a desire to cling to power, knowing full well how difficult it is to hold on to it through an alliance with the Islamic movement, which is rejected both internally and externally.

Omar added in a post on Facebook today: “Al-Burhan wants to fight the Islamists to benefit from their presence within the security and military apparatus, and then rule through the legitimacy of December to try to convince the inside that he is loyal to the revolution, and sell to his regional allies – who are hostile to the Muslim Brotherhood – the illusion that he is the strong man who will eliminate the group’s influence in Sudan through the theory of ‘digging with a needle’.”

He continued: “Since the revolution broke out and the man jumped to the forefront of the scene, he wanted to use the same equation that Bashir created to stay in power, so he sought the support of the Rapid Support Forces and worked to strengthen them to be the guardians of his power. At the same time, he continued to work with the former regime in secret by protecting Ali Karti’s faction and planning with him on every small and large matter. Ultimately, he created a polarizing situation that led to the outbreak of war on April 15, 2023”.

He added: “In the midst of the war, Al-Burhan continued on the same path, creating an alliance of contradictions and continuing to feed on the divisions between them. He polarized the Darfur movements to deepen social divisions in the region and turn the war in Darfur into a confrontation between social and tribal components. He expanded the presence and influence of the Islamic movement and elements of the former regime and relied on them politically, financially, militarily, and diplomatically. He created armed groups on a regional basis that were not subject to the influence of the armed forces or the Islamic movement, but rather to his direct influence.”

“As we heard yesterday, he returns to flirt with the December revolution and appeal to its youth, claiming his loyalty to them and to the revolution, even though he is the same person who participated in shedding their blood in front of the General Command and after the October 25 coup, without the slightest compassion or mercy”.
