Kordofan: Rhino – The death toll from the bombing of civilian areas in North and West Kordofan states has risen to 59, with dozens more wounded, amid accusations from local residents that the bombing is “systematic” and targets specific social groups.
In a statement signed by the head of the Hawazma Shura Council, Abdul Jalil al-Basha, the tribe accused official authorities in Port Sudan of bearing responsibility for what it described as a “crime against humanity,” demanding an international investigation and accountability for those responsible.
It also called on members of the tribe inside and outside Sudan to unite in the face of what it considered to be the targeting of civilians “who have no connection to the war other than their social affiliation,” in addition to appealing to the regional and international communities to intervene urgently to stop the violations.
The Hawazma tribe, which is spread across a number of areas in Kordofan, described what happened as “systematic ethnic targeting” because it is classified, according to a statement issued by the tribe’s Shura Council, as a social incubator for the Rapid Support Forces.
Twenty-eight civilians, including women and children, were killed early Monday morning in an airstrike that targeted the veterinary unit building in the city of Sinut in West Kordofan state, according to local leaders and sources. The building was being used as a shelter for displaced people who had fled the cities of El Obeid and El Rahad and other areas of conflict in Kordofan, noting that the victims were asleep when the strike occurred. Among the dead were nine women, 12 children, and a number of men, while others were injured, some critically.
In a separate attack on the same afternoon, local sources reported that drones bombed a market in the Safiya area northeast of Sudri in North Kordofan state, killing 31 people and injuring dozens. The attack came at a time when the market was bustling with civilian activity.
