The Egyptian Network for Human Rights has documented the third death of a Sudanese citizen in an Egyptian police station within a week. The network reported the death of a Sudanese man on Saturday, February 14, in the custody of the Agouza police station in Giza governorate. The network explained that the deceased was detained for not having a valid residence permit.
It attributed the death to suffocation due to severe overcrowding and harsh detention conditions. Information indicates that more than 40 people were detained in cramped rooms measuring no more than two meters by two meters, under deteriorating humanitarian conditions. The network said it is currently working to monitor and document the victim’s personal data and the circumstances of his death.
According to the Egyptian Network’s documentation, two Sudanese citizens, one a child and the other an elderly man, died last week in police stations as a result of catastrophic detention conditions and inhumane treatment. Sudanese nationals in Egypt are subjected to detention and deportation campaigns amid widespread criticism from human rights organizations.
