US President Donald Trump’s advisor on Arab and African affairs (Masad Paulos) confirmed on Sunday that there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan, despite what he described as an “unprecedented flow of weapons to both sides of the war.”

In an interview with Al Jazeera today on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Paules added, “We are working with partners to find a peaceful solution to the situation in Sudan,” stressing that the Sudanese – Sudanese political path is the only framework that will enable the country to transition to civilian rule.

“We are communicating with both sides of the conflict in Sudan to reach a peaceful, consensual solution,” he said, revealing that “there is a list of sanctions and tools that can be used in Sudan if necessary.”

Regarding channels of communication, Paules revealed that he is in constant or near-constant contact with Sudanese army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, while his colleagues are in contact with leaders of the Rapid Support Forces, noting that direct communication with its commander, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, “is not easy,” but does occur from time to time through institutional channels.

Paul held both sides of the conflict responsible for the deterioration of the situation, speaking of an “unprecedented flow of weapons to both sides” in recent weeks, describing it as a regrettable development that further complicates the crisis.
