TASIS Alliance: African Union decision on Sudan is “historic”

The new Sudanese coalition, known as the “Tasis” coalition, welcomed the decision of the African Union Peace and Security Council in Addis Ababa, describing it as a historic position that upholds the principles of “New Africa.”

The African Union upheld its decision of October 27, 2021, to suspend Sudan’s membership, following actions taken by army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan that led to the end of the partnership with the transitional civilian government.

Ibrahim al-Mirghani, a prominent leader in the coalition, told Sky News Arabia that this position reflects a renewed African commitment to the values on which the continent’s regional system is based, foremost among which are the preservation of constitutional legitimacy and support for the paths of democratic civilian transition in member states.

He stressed that the continued suspension of membership sends a clear message that a return to the union’s institutions can only be achieved through an agreed political process that guarantees an end to the war and the restoration of civilian rule.

Al-Mirghani added that the countries that “stood firm and resolute against attempts to legitimize the military contributed to the failure of the project to recognize the existing authorities in Port Sudan,” considering that the decision embodies the continent’s adherence to the principle of rejecting unconstitutional changes.

For his part, Dr. Al-Gouni Mustafa Al-Sharif, the coalition’s representative in Washington, said that what happened was “a failed attempt by the allies of the Port Sudan regime to circumvent the decisions of the African Peace and Security Council to lift the suspension of Sudan’s membership, but African countries stood up to it, and we highly appreciate what they did.”
