Livestock exporters: Sudan’s livestock sector faces total collapse

Khalid Wafi, head of the Live Livestock Division at the Union of Chambers of Commerce, described Sudan’s livestock sector as completely collapsed and in need of a comprehensive overhaul from scratch, after the war affected all its components and had a direct impact on individuals’ incomes and the rise in prices of animal products, especially the increase in the price of milk due to the collapse of the dairy sector.

Wafi told Al-Rakoba that the war has caused severe damage to the livestock sector, most notably the death of large numbers of livestock and the loss of vast areas of pastureland in pastoral areas as a result of displacement and ongoing theft.

He pointed out that the states of North Kordofan, Darfur, and some central areas were among the most affected, as the destruction affected the sector’s vital infrastructure, including veterinary research and study centers, quarries, and slaughterhouses, most of which were completely destroyed.

He added that the poultry and cattle sectors lost important breeds during the war, while the situation for sheep, goats, and camels was relatively better, despite also being subjected to widespread looting that affected the animal supply of the beneficiary states and caused meat prices to fluctuate and the cost of exports to rise.

Wafi explained that animal feed and veterinary vaccines were severely affected after the loss of most of the factories producing veterinary medicines that covered the needs of the states. Despite this, livestock exports continued during the war.
