UN: 7 Minefields Inside Khartoum Neighborhoods and High Levels of Contamination

Rhino: Agencies – The United Nations Mine Action Program in Sudan announced that seven minefields have been discovered so far within the capital, Khartoum, according to program director Rashid Siddiq in remarks to the press on Saturday.

Siddiq said that the recent fighting in residential areas has led to high levels of contamination from unexploded ordnance, noting that the situation in Khartoum is of particular concern.

He explained that explosives are scattered across multiple locations, including homes, roads, schools, and hospitals, and that their mixing with debris makes detection and removal operations more difficult.

Siddiq’s remarks came on the occasion of the International Day for Mine Awareness, where he emphasized that the nature of urban combat has increased the likelihood of unexploded ordnance in populated areas, posing a direct threat to civilians.
