Rhino: Agencies – Darfur Initiative for Justice and Peace condemned the airstrike that targeted a World Food Program humanitarian aid convoy on Saturday. The convoy, consisting of two trucks, was end route from the city of Al-Daleng to the city of Kadugli in South Kordofan State, resulting in the death of one of the drivers.
The Initiative cited sources as saying that a Sudanese Army convoy bombed two trucks chartered to transport humanitarian aid that were on their way to Kadugli.
The Initiative added in a statement today: “We at the Darfur Initiative for Justice and Peace strongly condemn the targeting of humanitarian aid convoys, and we call for the establishment of impartial and transparent investigative committees to look into all violations, especially those targeting humanitarian workers.” We emphasize that humanitarian operations are not subject to compromise nor should they be used as a tool for political pressure or a weapon in armed conflicts, and we demand that their urgent, safe, and unimpeded flow to all those in need be guaranteed in accordance with international humanitarian law”.
The World Food Program had issued a statement condemning the incident and calling for a swift and transparent investigation, noting the deterioration of humanitarian conditions due to the escalation of military clashes, which has led to the displacement of thousands of civilians, warning that targeting humanitarian convoys undermines efforts to deliver life-saving humanitarian aid to millions of Sudanese facing the threat of famine, and clarifying that the two trucks bore clear markings and logos indicating their humanitarian nature.
