Statement from Sudanese Observatory on the Recruitment of Civilian Women in Al-Fasher

Khartoum: Rhino – The Observatory expresses its deep shock and profound regret over reports indicating that civilian women were recruited into the ranks of the armed forces in the city of Al-Fasher and forced to take part in combat operations, which led to the deaths of several of them.

The recruitment of civilian women and their involvement in active combat constitutes a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and international conventions that strictly prohibit the participation of civilians—particularly women—in armed conflicts. These practices place full responsibility on the parties that carried out or facilitated the recruitment and coercion.

What occurred in Al-Fasher represents a serious violation of human values and Sudanese social norms, which have long honored women and rejected their exploitation in armed conflicts.

The Observatory calls for an immediate and transparent investigation under the supervision of the United Nations and independent human rights mechanisms to ensure accountability for those responsible and to prevent the recurrence of such violations.
